There are lots of ways in which you could ask your landscaper to redesign your garden, and one which is always popular, as well as eye-catching, is turning your garden into a tropical utopia. By following a few simple rules regarding the layout and including the appropriate foliage and features, your tropical nirvana can be created.
Some might question why you would want tropical landscaping in your garden rather than something more contemporary and functional. Not that there is anything wrong with contemporary and functional but, would it not be amazing to have a landscaped garden that is awash with colour, can transport you to a tropical paradise just a few steps from your door, and makes the jaws drop of anyone who walks into your garden for the first time? Of course, it would.
The question is how to create your tropical landscaped garden, and that is a process that we hope to help you with here. We have outlined five ideas that your landscaper can incorporate into your new landscaping design to produce your dream tropical garden.
Place Plants Close Together: If you were to ever visit a tropical rainforest, one facet of them you will discover that much of the foliage is dense. In addition to growing close together, you will also find plants that are dense at lots of different heights. Therefore, when choosing plants for your new landscape design pick ones that will grow to different heights and ensure that they are planted extremely close to each other to replicate dense tropical foliage.
Use A Wide Variety Of Foliage
Following on from wanting to have dense foliage, another way you can replicate a tropical rainforest is to have as many different types of plants as you can in your garden. Rainforests have plants of all types, each with their unique foliage, all growing to different sizes, and each with leaves with varying widths, patterns, and texture. When it comes to creating a tropical garden, the more variety, the better.
Include As Many Different Colours As You Can
Type the word tropical into Google and then click on images. Undoubtedly, the first thing you will notice about the images that appear is that they all include an array of rich, vibrant colours. So, it follows that to recreate tropical beauty within your garden, your landscape design must include flowers and plants of as many different colours as you think of. Colours to focus on are reds, oranges, greens, and yellows.
Create A Water Feature
In those same images we mentioned in the previous section, hopefully, you will also have noticed the beaches and wonderfully blue sea. Whilst creating a beach might be beyond your landscape design, you can at least include some kind of water feature to add to the tropical environment you are creating. Examples include a small pond, a water cascade, or a pool if your garden is large enough.
Add Some Vines
The tropical rainforests account for 90% of the vines that grow in the world, so why not include some in your tropical landscape design? They can add a degree of authenticity to your tropical garden, and will most certainly be a talking point for those who visit. Vines that you should consider include, Vanilla Vine, White Potato Creeper, and Philodendron Anderson’s Red.
